How to Make Her Laugh

How to Make Her Laugh

Women aren’t Rubix cubes.

We’re not indecipherable beings that come from Venus. We’re of the same blood and relatively similar genetic makeup as you. Making us laugh shouldn’t be hard, but sometimes it feels like it is.

Chances are you can make her laugh without some massive gameplan. That being said, if you haven’t dated for a while, it’s nice to get a little refresher on how to make a woman laugh in a romantic context before your next date or prior to chatting up that cutie at the coffee shop.

During my 100 date experiment, I went on a total of 101 dates with 52 different men. Some made me laugh and smile, but most were super serious!

Sure I didn’t mind learning about the serious man’s startup, hobbies, or passions. But if he couldn’t make me laugh on a first date, then chances were I wouldn’t see him for a second. Unfortunately, he naturally ended up in the dreaded friendzone

In fact, date #92 of 101 was super funny and made me laugh quite often. During our first three dates, he was especially witty. I could tell he was very present and had some improvisation skills (whether or not he knew it). He eventually became my husband.

We’ll dive into his tactics shortly.

If you aren’t very funny, witty, or good at improv – don’t stress out. Making women laugh takes patience and practice. Start with some of my tips below, and you’ll be off to a good start. Let’s dive into today’s article on how to make her laugh.

how to make a woman laugh

How To Make Her Laugh on a Date

Let’s say you’ve successfully scored a date with a girl you really like. I recommend that you mentally prepare a few things ahead of time which will give you an advantage when trying to make her laugh. Don’t mistake this with using cheesy pickup lines or routines on your date. That’s not what I’m advising. In fact, never-ever memorize lines to make a girl laugh, smile, feel good, or feel bad. Instead, think about doing the following:

Play a Game on Your Date

This is what my now-boyfriend did so well during our first date. It was April 2012, and we agreed to meet up at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. At first, we walked along the beach for a while. Then we watched all the cute dogs running in and out of the cold Pacific Ocean waters. Lastly, we waited for the sun to go down. After, we decided to grab a beer and some food at a restaurant across the street.

When we arrived at the restaurant, we had an option of either sitting downstairs or upstairs. Downstairs seemed casual, but offered no ocean views. So we decided to grab a table upstairs. Little did we know, upstairs was the super fancy portion of the restaurant.

Eventually the waitress dropped off a couple of menus. There were 3 entrees listed on the menu. We decided to order a beer because neither of us could decide on what to eat. About 10 minutes goes by and we’re still looking over the menu.

Then my now-boyfriend looks over to me and says “Hey, let’s play a game.” I immediately smiled. He asked me to silently rank each of the three dinner options from 1 to 10. He was going to rank them in his head as well. Then, the game included us blurting out our rankings at the same time.

It was a super cute game. I almost died laughing as we simultaneously blurted out our super low rankings. So we ditched the high-end restaurant and bounced across town to a deep-dish pizza joint location.

Make a Joke About Yourself

When all else fails, make your date laugh by cracking a joke about yourself. This is a great technique used by almost every comedian in the world. People love it when you can bash on yourself and be unaffected by it.

Examples include: if you are a foodie, make a joke about your big belly. Tell her that you love food more than your abs (while sticking out your gut). Or, if you are balding, crack a joke about your receding hairline.

Hey, I even have personal guy friend who has a third nipple. When we go to bars around town, he shows it off to make women laugh all the time.

The point is, don’t take yourself so seriously. If you have an insecurity, use it to your advantage. Take a moment and think about how you could make a joke about yourself on your next date. It’s a great strategy that will help you stop questioning yourself on how to make her laugh.

Use Situational Funnies

You might be asking me what the heck a situational funny is.

Before I explain, I want to discuss why being present and having some improv skills are important in the dating game.

Being present is turning off your smartphone. It’s making great eye contact with your date. It’s shutting off the voice in the back of your head when you are with another person. It’s about living and experiencing the world around you. Try it, and you’ll become a master at dating.

Improv is the ability to come up with random cool things to say, that aren’t scripted or prepared ahead of time. I urge you to never write out things to say on a date, ahead of time.

So what is a situational funny?

It’s when something out of your control happens around you that makes you stop, laugh, or smile. An example of this from my experiment was when I went on a second date with a guy, and his friend joined along.

His friend noticed some cheese hanging down my date’s chin. He looked at me and nodded. He was using body language to point out the cheesy situational funny. I almost died laughing.

Be Mobile

It’s easier to make a woman laugh if you have material to work with.

This is made easy when you two are going for a walk or doing an activity rather than in a stationary environment eating food or sipping on tea.

If you’re just going to grab a coffee (a very common first date idea but not the only one) you can ask her to go for a stroll before or after – same goes for food.

Things can get awkward when you two are seated across from each other in a restaurant and are forced to make conversation. Avoid any awkwardness by moving around so that you’re surrounded by new stimuli and always have something new to talk about.

How to Make Her Laugh Over Text Messages

Now let’s say your date has ended or, perhaps you used my online dating tips to score a number from a new girl you met on a dating site. What could you say to make her laugh over a text? Here’s some strategies for you to explore when trying to make her smile and laugh when you aren’t in person:

Own Your Personality

Don’t be someone you’re not, and always own who you are. Practice being the same person you are in person as you are on text. During my dating experiment, it was always a turnoff when the nice guy in person tried to be the bad-boy after the date on text.

When I was single and having a rough day, I really appreciated when guys made me laugh over text messages. As an example, my husband always used to text me “don’t trip chocolate chip.” It was so silly and stupid that it always made me laugh and smile. He would have said that to my face as well. That’s being true to your personality.

Relive Any Shared Hilarious Experiences

This one applies to when you’ve already met a girl for a date. Side note: I’m hoping you followed my first date rules and secured a second date while on that first date.

But if you didn’t, reignite the conversation by sending her a text to relive a funny shared experience you had on your first date. This will help you close for another date.

Advice: Women love it when a man remembers moments in time. It doesn’t have to be our birthdays, anniversaries, or another big event. It could simply be when you first met for coffee and that supermodel walked in, broke her high heel, and fell to the ground. That will get her to laugh instantly.

Send a GIF &  Smiley Faces

So the girl that you are seeing…what does she love? Maybe it’s fat bulldogs. If so, try sending her a funny bulldog GIF via text. She’ll most certainly laugh and smile. If you haven’t met up with the girl yet, check out her Facebook page or online dating profile. You’ll definitely find out what she loves if you read her interests section.

I also recommend that you end each text message conversation with a smiley face. This implies that you don’t just want to be her friend. There are so many types of smiley faces on today’s smartphones. Pick out the one that you think will make her laugh or smile.

Should You Disclose That You’re Divorced on Dating Apps and Sites?

Should You Disclose That You're Divorced on Dating Apps and Sites?

Should you disclose that you’re divorced on dating apps and sites?

The simple answer is this: YES. You should 100% disclose that you’re divorced and get it out of the way as quickly as possible.

If you’re new here, I’m Emyli, head coach and cofounder at emlovz.com. In 2012 I went on a 100 date experiment. Since then I’ve been helping divorced men and women find love fast with our coaching programs.

It’s important to note that trust and communication are two of the biggest things when it comes to building a good foundation in a relationship. If you don’t disclose that you’re divorced early on, then you’re starting out a relationship with dishonesty, or at least an omission of the truth.

Of course, I understand letting potential dates know you are divorced can be easier said than done. That’s why this article is here to walk you through the ways that you can go about disclosing your divorce on dating apps and sites. We’ll also review considerations you should keep in mind before venturing into the dating world post-divorce.

Should I Disclose That I’m Divorced on Dating Sites & Apps

Consideration: How Divorced Are You?

Disclose That You're Divorced

When you say that you’re divorced, do you mean that you have finalized your divorce or are you legally separated? It’s important to take inventory of your feelings when you are legally separated and shortly after the divorce becomes finalized.

Even if you were the person to initiate the divorce or have been wholly accepting that your marriage was not meant to last, it is normal to go through a grieving process. Make sure that you have taken time to heal following your divorce. Getting back in the dating world when you are still grieving will inevitably taint any relationships you begin to pursue.

Tips for Disclosing Your Divorce

Tip #1: Be Positive

This is one of the most important things to keep in mind when it comes time to disclose that you’re divorced on dating apps and sites. You don’t want to write a bio or tagline that’s bemoaning how difficult it is to put yourself back out there now that you’re divorced. No one wants to go out with someone who’s profile is a repository for all their negative thoughts.

Seeing a single person be negative in the dating app or site profile is going to be treated with a hard pass and swipe left.

Remember that there is a lot of competition in the online dating world. Women get inundated with messages each day, so they have the opportunity to be much more selective. They’re not going to waste any time on a guy with a profile that is unimpressive or negative.

Don’t present your divorce like this terrible chapter in your life, something to be ashamed of, or a failure. Remember that a whopping 40 to 50% of American marriages end in divorce. It’s not something that is uncommon or even considered taboo in this day and age.

When you disclose your divorce on dating apps, present it in a way that lets women know you have grown and learned from your divorce. Remember that going through a marriage and getting divorced gives you more insight on what to look for in a relationship. You are also now better equipped to know what to avoid and how to handle opposition.

Tip #2: Don’t Bash Your Ex

When you disclose your divorce, don’t bash your ex. Even if you hate your ex and they were some kind of emotionally abusive monster, don’t bring past drama and resentments into your new relationship.

To display anger toward your ex will overwhelm the starnger on the other side of the screen.

And, if you do this, you’re going to come off as someone who is not over their previous relationship. Singles will be wary of a man who seems to have lingering feelings for someone. No one wants to be with someone who is carrying around emotional baggage from a past relationship.

If you’re extremely angry with your ex, work to resolve that outside of the dating world. Consider seeing a professional counselor if a heartbreak is affecting your everyday life, enlist the support of trusted friends and practice self-care.

And when it comes to dating, show the person you’re with that you are emotionally available by keeping things positive and not dragging your ex through the mud.

Tip #3: If You Have Kids, Disclose That as Well

Disclose That You're Divorced

If you have children, you definitely want to let the person you’re dating know that from the start. There may be people who don’t want to date someone with a child. Others may not want children of their own and don’t want to deal with the potential role of being a stepparent. And it’s ok if these people choose to pass on an opportunity to date you.

But remember this — you don’t want to date those women anyway.

Disclosing that you’re divorced with kids weeds out anyone who wouldn’t be a fit for you. This way, you don’t have to waste your time meeting someone who is not going to be the right partner.

Being a good parent is extremely appealing to most people. In fact, a man who has proven he is a good father is downright sexy. If you don’t believe me, check out this Instagram account dedicated to hot dads in Disney World.

Don’t be shy about disclosing you’re a dad (or woman). Own it and be proud of it, and singles will respond positively to that.

Tip #4: How to Disclose You’re Divorced in Your Dating Bio

Disclose That You're Divorced

Some dating websites and apps allow you to select your marital status from a drop-down menu so it is publicly displayed. In these cases, selecting “Divorced” allows you to easily disclose this information to anyone who comes across your profile.

But other apps don’t give you this option, which leaves the disclosure completely up to you. It can seem awkward to just stick a line about divorce in your bio, but it can be done.

Here are a few examples of tag lines you could use to concisely disclose that you’re divorced:

  • “I’ve learned a lot from my previous marriage and divorce, and I feel ready and confident to move forward with someone special.”
  • “Previously married and armed with maturity, wit, and a mean sense of style. Ready to find Mrs./Mr. Right.”
  • “Full disclosure: I’m divorced and have learned a lot from that experience. I’m excited for this next chapter of my life and can’t wait to share it with an amazing person.”
  • “For the sake of transparency (honesty is the new black, amirite?), I’d like to let you know I’m divorced, happy and excited to meet someone special. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s delve into the serious issues: ranch or blue cheese?”

You don’t have to use these verbatim, but do you notice some of the keywords I used here? When disclosing your divorce, you want to demonstrate that the divorce is a chapter in your life that gave you the knowledge and experience you needed to become a better man. Presenting information about your divorce in this way makes you seem mature, committed and stable.

Tip #5: Disclosing Divorce in Online Messages

Do you feel super uncomfortable putting divorce in your bio? If so, at the very least, disclose your divorce before you go on a first date. Trust me, you want to be able to establish that the person you’re going out with is cool with you being divorced.

The anticipation of the first date with someone you met online is enough to elicit some nervousness. Why put even more pressure on yourself by failing to disclose that you’re divorced?

Find an appropriate time (don’t wait too long) when you’re messaging someone to let her know that you are divorced. You could say something like this:

“So, I just want to let you know upfront that I’m divorced. There’s no drama there and I’ve moved on from it, but I’m a big fan of honesty, so wanted to let you know.”

Don’t make a big thing out of it or go on and on about it. If they asks you questions, answer honestly but remember to keep things light and positive.

Best Dating Apps For Divorcees

Wondering which apps to log into?

Here are the top apps for divorcees.

Hinge

The app that’s designed to be deleted, Hinge gives you more search filters than just about any other app in your pocket. It appeals to those looking for a long-term relationship rather than a short-term fling. As such its users are generally older, more mature, and more used to dating divorced singles than those on, for example, Tinder.

Bumble

Bumble is feminist Tinder.

It looks and feels like Tinder but there are some exceptions. For one, when users graduate from Tinder and want something more serious, they move on to Bumble. Secondly, women message first, supposedly giving them more power in the early stage dynamics of online messaging.

The League

The League is often referred to as, elitist Tinder.

This is because you must apply to use the app. You may be waitlisted for weeks, months, or years (although it took us a few days). Users are typically in their late 20s and 30s, are highly ambitious, and professionally successful.

If you want to find a partner as driven and ambitious as yourself, this is the app for you.

Match

Match has the highest volume of users 35 and up than any app.

If you’re looking to date someone 35 or older this is one of the apps you should download. Match has the highest concentration of divorced users of maybe any app out there.

Best Dating Sites For Men Over 40

best dating sites for over 40

Ready to hit the dating scene again?

Things may have changed a bit since you were last single.

Gone are the days of prowling the town in search of your new lady. I mean, meeting women out at night is still very much a possibility, but the most common way to meet women is online.

santa rosa dating coach

You clearly know this and are willing to meet women online.

The question now is, which app should I as a man over 40 use to meet women?

Do you really want to be on Tinder at this stage of the game? Is it worth it to try eHarmony again? Or maybe you want to give a niche site like Fitness Singles a shot?

When you’re over 40, certain sites/apps are definitely “better” than others, but that also depends on your strategy. For example, you may not be interested in answering 100 survey questions anymore if you’ve been dating for 20 years. Or, you might be coming out of a divorce, so today’s dating scene is very new to you. In that case, you might prefer sites that are simpler but feel more authentic.

Below, I’ve listed eight of the best dating sites for men over 40. I’ve also broken them down by type, as well as the different advantages they have to offer. If you see some sites that you absolutely refused to use in the past, you might want to take a second look. And as for the ones you already know, you might learn how to use them in a new way. Without further ado, let’s take a look!

Best Dating Sites for Over 40 That Are Fairly New

When you’re in your 40s and have been dating since your 20s, you’ve pretty much seen it all. Luckily, things constantly change when it comes to the digital world. Just when you think you can’t look at that same woman in your search results for the hundredth time without hurling yourself out the window, another brand new site will come along with a fresh new pool of choices.

Are you a 40+ dater who wants to keep up with what’s current? If so, here are three sites that you should pay most attention to.

Hinge: Most Likely to Convert to a Date

hinge

Hinge came out at the same time as Tinder, and bills itself as the best site for long-term matches. Originally, the site used your Facebook friends list to find “friends of friends” you might be interested in. But as of 2018, it ditched the Facebook login requirement.

Now, you get a newsfeed where you can like and comment on specific photos directly. It also prompts you to answer questions, and they display those answers between photos. You also get a daily “Most Compatible” match. This suggestion is based on what you’ve liked on other people’s profiles and who is most likely to find you attractive.

While it sounds simple, the algorithm is said to be Nobel Prize-winning. Not only that, but 90% of people surveyed when it first came out said their first dates were great, and 75% said they’d go on a second date. Not bad. And my clients constantly tell me they are having more success with Hinge than any other dating app (of course their goals are to long term relationships).

So if online dating feels impersonal or stale to you, Hinge could be worth a try. At worst, you’ll have a new online dating experience. And, best case scenario, you might get better matches than the random people you’ve been texting with elsewhere.

Tinder: Biggest User Base

Best Dating Sites for Over 40

When it comes to the best dating sites for over 40 singles, we can’t ignore Tinder. Obviously, you’ve heard of it. You might even be on it. But you may not have really analyzed the pros and cons when it comes to dating in your age bracket.

First of all, Tinder is huge. It has the biggest user base of all dating sites, with an audience of nearly 8 million. Yet, unlike Hinge, which forces you to read through people’s comments as you scroll through photos, Tinder makes the bio sort of an afterthought. Instead, you simply swipe right or left on people’s photos. In a way, it almost feels like a game. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does create a more impulsive, casual environment. Combined with the sheer amount of people on the site, it’s no wonder it became known more for hookups.

So, a popular app like Tinder is great if you want to see a lot of options. The number of people on there seems endless (although you have a maximum of around 50 free “swipe rights” per day). It can be a fun experience if you just want to “see what’s out there” after a breakup and don’t want to start dating seriously.

Just be aware that it can also feel harsh. People feel less obligated to be polite or text you back when the vibe is this casual. This can be painful if you’re looking for validation after a long relationship. Not to mention there are 9 men for every 1 female user. It might be easier to find Waldo than a woman to date on this app.

All that being said, if you do want a long-term relationship, you may want to go on Tinder anyway.

Why?

Overall, you will stand out as the “nice guy” to any woman who is looking for the same thing. Not to mention you can write in your bio that you’re looking for something serious and simply not swipe on women in their early 20s.

Bumble: Most Attractive Women?

Bumble

With one of the highest percentage of female users, Bumble pretty much turns every online dating experience you’ve had on its head. On this site, you can’t talk to women unless they message you first.

If you’re burned out on online dating by this point, this can feel like a welcome change. Granted, you’ll still run into the occasional catfish (let’s face it, they’re everywhere). Still, not having to think of witty opening lines all the time can be a relief. And if you’re new to the dating scene and are a little apprehensive, you won’t have to worry as much about rejection.

Just don’t get too discouraged if you don’t get a ton of messages. However, if you do find yourself in that boat, there are things you can do. One of them is, don’t swipe right on so many profiles! If the algorithm detects that you “like” too many people, it’ll assume you must be desperate. Once that happens, your profile will sink to the bottom of everyone’s list, never to be seen again. For more tips like this, check out my list of Bumble hacks for guys.

One thing that most of my clients say about Bumble is that it seems to have more attractive women. No one really knows why, though. Some claim they could be fake profiles, while others say the algorithm is serving up the better looking people first. Whatever the reason is, the extra eye candy definitely helps it land a spot on the list of best dating sites for over 40 guys! So give it a shot today.

Old School Over 40 Dating Sites for Guys That Still Work

Sometimes, especially if you’ve been around the block already when it comes to dating, you just want to come back to something familiar. A reliable dating site that delivers some decent matches might be all you need. But out of all the “old school” dating sites, which ones work best if you’re over 40?

Here’s what I’d say are the three best dating sites for men over 40 that you’re bound to know well — and if you don’t, then it may be time to fire up some new profiles.

Match

Match.com

Match is the granddaddy of all dating sites, and is practically the default choice for a lot of people when it comes to online dating. The sheer number of people who use it can be enough of a reason to try it out (Statista puts its user base at 2.24 million) — and in 17 states, particularly in a lot of the South, it’s actually more popular than Tinder, the #1 dating app.

Match also has a feature called “boost,” where for a small fee, you can pay to have your profile show up in the top six results when women are searching for men like you. This is a great way to take advantage of the large amount of people on Match, because a boost can put your profile in front of tons of women in a short period of time, which isn’t possible on smaller sites. And, they’ll even send you a report afterward that tells you how many women saw your profile, and who they were.

The size of Match’s audience can give you a feel for how women generally respond to you across the board. When you’re looking to change up your dating strategy later in life, or jumpstart things again after being off the market, being able to see how your profile stacks up to others on large site can be very telling. And if the results aren’t great, don’t worry — help is always available.

Zoosk

zooskZoosk started way back in 2007, which means it might have been fairly new when you were in your late 20s. Today, Zoosk is still going strong. It doesn’t have quite as many members as a site like Match, but I recommend that guys looking for a partner use no less than five apps anyway — so it could be worth adding to your strategy if it can widen your dating pool. To find out, see how many singles pop up in your area when you do some free searches.

One of its unique features is its automated messaging system, where you can set up an auto-reply to anyone who shows interest in your profile. This takes away the pressure of having to break the ice if you’re just getting your feet wet in online dating. Just keep in mind that it can also be confusing when you receive a message from a woman, because those might be auto-replies, too.

eHarmonybest dating sites for over 40

You’ve most likely heard of eHarmony, which markets itself as the best site for finding a spouse. For that reason, you could also call it one of the best dating sites for over 40 singles, since a lot of folks in that age bracket are looking for a long-term commitment.

eHarmony has an extensive questionnaire you have to complete in the beginning (it could take you about an hour, just to warn you). But you could receive more compatible matches, considering all the data you’ve given them.

That being said, you may or may not get as many matches on eHarmony as you would on a larger site with a lower barrier of entry. That can actually be a plus if you’re sick of the dating world and consider yourself very selective at this point — or, if you’re not used to online dating yet, and prefer a site that’s less overwhelming. Many people start their online dating experiences with eHarmony, so you also may find more authentic people on it, as well. Get ‘em before they’re jaded!

Specialty Dating Sites for Guys Who Are 40+

Do you feel like you’ve seen all there is when it comes to dating sites by the time you hit your 40s? If you’re not new to any of the sites I’ve already mentioned, you might want to try a specialty dating site that caters to your demographic.

These sites tend to be smaller, but they do attract a certain type of person — so what you lose in volume, you could make up for in quality. Here are a couple of specialty sites that are great for guys over 40.

Fitness Singles

Fitness Singles

If sports or fitness activities are a big part of your life, Fitness Singles might be the site for you. It has a simple set-up, and does seem to attract people who are leading a healthy lifestyle. The site will ask you to list your top three activities as well as your skill level, which helps initial conversation. You can show interest in profiles and conduct basic searches with a free membership. The number of emails you can send to other members is capped though. So if the site works well for you, you’ll eventually have to pay to communicate.

Most use Fitness Singles for romantic connections, but some use it for finding workout partners as well. The site has a pretty small membership base. However, if you’re a fitness junkie, it might be a good source for more dating options. Whether or not you actually find someone to date, it could be worth the experience of talking to women who share your enthusiasm for exercise — or finding a cute athletic type to cozy up with.

Silver Singles

silver singles

Silver Singles is most effective for men in their 50s and 60s. Some say that their members tend to be well-educated and high quality, even though their user base is small. The people you find on this site most likely will be around your age or older than you, with 55% of its users being over age 45. On the flip side, 45% percent of its members are younger than 45. So if you’re looking for women interested in older men, this could be worth trying out.

Silver Singles has slightly more women than men (59% compared to 41%). It works well in certain areas that have a greater number of people over 40. It’s less effective in large cities with lots of 20-somethings.

Best Dating Sites for Over 40: Wrap-Up

The best dating sites for men over 40 will vary depending on the kind of experience you want. Large sites with lots of members are great if you want to just look around or casually date. If you’re fresh out of a relationship, this might work for you.

However, sites with unique matching algorithms can help narrow your choices down to someone who suits your personality and interests more. This works better if you’re looking for something serious. And finally, newer dating sites — or smaller ones for a certain demographic — can shake things up if you’ve truly “seen it all.”

Still overwhelmed? Don’t worry, it’s a lot to take in. Not only that, but the world of online dating constantly changes, which makes it hard to keep up with! And especially when you’re over 40, putting energy into dating can start to feel like a chore.
