The habit of optimizing our physical features with AI is so pervasive that it warrants a moment to talk about its merits and the type of relationship artificial intelligence and dating app photos should have with one another.

Let’s be frank, it’s probably not a good idea.

The Argument Against Using AI-Generated Photos

When it comes to online dating, singles are plagued by fake people, fake profiles, fake conversations, and fake photos.

We’re all screaming out to meet a genuine person online, but for many of us, it feels impossible to do. Instead of being transparent about who we are and what we look like, we take photos from the most flattering of angles, write about all our amazing hobbies, write that we’re all over 6 feet, and only post photos of us traveling.

We put this idealized version of ourselves forward while brushing our not-so-admirable qualities under the rug. Of course, it’s natural that we would try to put our best foot forward, but we cross a line when we use AI to make ourselves better looking. 

Using AI to optimize photos is the same as lying about your work, hobbies, height, or any other trait that makes you more appealing to singles you want to swipe right.

Sure, using AI-enhanced photos will lead to more matches, as this writer details, but what happens when you two meet face to face and she’s immediately let down by what she sees?

She’ll feel let down, lied to, duped, and, most importantly, turned off.

Also, keep in mind that not all AI-generated photos are created equally.

This is sometimes what happens when AI plays god. Just because a photo’s been touched-up with AI doesn’t mean it’s better than the original.

The latter is clearly a fake. Anyone can see that. If a woman knows a photo is fake she won’t swipe right. Arguably it looks better than the first one, but not by much. Whereas the first photo is (arguably) less attractive, but because it is real it’s bound to receive more positive attention than the clearly fake second photo.

The Argument For Using AI-Generated Photos

Many guys just need a chance.

There are two big hurdles men need to jump when it comes to dating apps.

For one, they’re incredibly superficial. If you don’t have a lineup of photos that make you look like a model, you’re probably not getting many matches. Secondly, men are largely outnumbered on dating apps. Tinder has 9 men for every 1 female use.

What all this means is that men, really awesome, fun, funny, stable, men are getting overlooked.

A case can be made that if an AI photo helps get a good guy’s foot in the door, he should take it. 

You can justify this by saying that an AI photo can only get you so far. You still need to message her, build attraction, and convince her that you’re worth meeting in person.

If she agrees on a date, sure your AI photo played a role, but your personality played a much more important one.

The Bottom Line

Of course, this is a rosey perspective. All this AI generation will still bite you in the ass when she realizes you don’t look like your photos.

What About Using AI To Improve My Writing?

While using artificial intelligence to edit photos is the most common way AI is applied to dating app profiles, singles also use it to create bios and to message fellow dating app users.

But just because you can use these features should you?

Yes and no.

The reality is that filling out the written portion of your bio and messaging women online isn’t the difficult. If you think it is, all you need is a little practice and guidance.

Using AI is a cop-out. If you’re relying on it to form a connection, you aren’t connecting with a woman, but your AI persona is. What happens when you two meet face to face? Will she be expecting someone else and feel off when she meets you? Not to mention how would you feel if you were speaking to a robot masquering as a human?
