How to Find a Suit for your GQ Photo in Your Profiles

How to Find a Suit for your GQ Photo in Your Profiles

Every man needs a suit in their wardrobe.

Whether you’re going to impress at a wedding, gala, on a hot date, or on your dating profile.

But not just any suit at Men’s Warehouse will do the trick.

To stand out and look your best there are certain rules that must followed if you want a GQ-approved ensemble.

Let’s dive into the dos and dont’s of how to find a suit.

How To Find A Suit

There are a million uses for having a GQ suit on hand.

Sure you’ll need them for in-person events like a fancy date night and galas but there’s an even more pressing reason to have one in your locker.

Before you have a reason to use one IRL, you’ll need to attract women online.

Most new relationships start online nowadays. Meeting a woman online is easier and more common than meeting one at a bar, party, or speed dating event combined.

But online dating is competitive and superficial.

Lean into how superficial online dating is when you dress to impress. One of your photos (ideally one of the first three) should capture you looking your finest.

We call this the GQ shot.

Rocking a badass suit in your profile shows her you know how to dress, you’re important, you have places to be, and that you’re a good-looking, respectable man.

This one photo alone will make you standout against a backdrop of selfies and grainy bar pictures.

It’ll show her that you’re different and worth investing in (or at least swiping right on).

Now… let’s go find that perfect suit.

The Color

As you’re browsing Saks, Bloomingdale’s, or Men’s Warehouse, you’ll be inundated with suit options.

The very first aspect you’ll want to consider for how to find a suit is the color.

Maybe you love flamboyant colors that catch the eye because they capture your personality. If that’s the case so be it.

But more often than not we’ll recommend playing it safe by opting for a black, grey, or dark blue suit.

Of course, this all comes down to your personal opinion and skin tone, however, if you’re not a fashionist, we recommend keeping it simple. A darker-hued suit makes it easier to mix and match with shoes, hats, ties, and shirts.

Opting for an Easter orange may severely limit your style.

When in doubt, just go for a darker-colored suit.

Where To Buy A Suit

A few years ago we would have said that to buy a suit in person is an absolute must.

That isn’t necessarily the case anymore.

We still recommend shopping around in-person to get a feel for the style you like but it’s also totally possible to find a tailor-made suit without ever stepping into a store or even trying a suit on.

MTailor, for example, creates custom-made suits from their app. Simply take a picture of yourself in your best-fitted clothing and it will tailor the suit of your choice to your liking. The company claims it can tailor suits 20% better than your average tailor. Not sure how accurate that is, but it’s reviews speak for themselves.

Suitsupply is also another good option if you can’t be bothered to stop by a store. If you don’t know your measurements or want to ensure they are accurate, you can stop by a Suitsupply store and have a consultant measure you.

As far as in-person stores go, you have a few solid options including:

  • Men’s Warehouse
  • Nordstrom
  • Jos A. Bank
  • Saks
  • Express
  • Brooks Brothers
  • Banana Republic

It MUST Be Tailored

Finding the perfect fitting suit off the rack is harder than finding the needle in the haystack.

Even if you think you’ve found it, the woman shopping just feet away might disagree.

The reality is that everyone has a different body type.

If you don’t care how your suit fits, go ahead and buy whatever suit floats your boat, but that’s not the GQ way.

Most suits are made to fit the average body type. Seeing as how everyone is different, there are adjustments that must be made to mold this suit to your body. A tailor can make these adjustments for you.

Some adjustments they may make include:

  • Sleeves – sleeves should show a quarter inch of the cuff of your shirt
  • Body of jacket – ideally show a V-cut taper
  • Waist – you never want pants to sag
  • Legs – taper the pants to optimal fit
  • Hem – hem of pants must be adjusted to the correct length

While tailors are miracle workers, they can’t fix everything.

They can’t change the shoulder width, make a suit that’s clearly too large the perfect fit, change the button profile, change the lapels, or reshape the quarters of a jacket.

Don’t just buy any suit and then expect the tailor to alter it to satisfy your wildest and most unrealistic desires. Even the most expensive suit can be the wrong purchase if its proportions are too off.

This is why if you’re not used to purchasing suits, you want to make your purchase in-person so you can consult with professionals.

Multiple Buttons And Vents

There are plenty of one-button suits out there, but they’re difficult to pull off.

As for vents, they’re not only more fashionable but more functional.

Ventless suits that boast a single button were popular in the 80s, but like so many other 80s fashion trends, they’ve rightfully died out.

Shop With A Female

Maybe it’s a friend, friends, of maybe even a woman you’re seeing.

Considering you’re attempting to impress women with this new suit, it makes sense you’d consult with one before making a purchase.

If you have no idea which suit to buy, bring a friend along or snap photos to show them later.

If you’re part of Dating Decoded you can always snap photos and post them in our community. Our coaches and students will provide near-instant feedback.
